William Spencer collection of French manuscripts, 1770-1861.

French letters and manuscripts relating primarily to French affairs during the latter part of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. Includes several pieces from the Napoleonic period. Among the writers of these manuscripts are Parisian literati, members of the Académie Française, artists, churchmen, as well as men in civil and military positions. They include Grimod de la Reynière, Louis-Francois Bausset, Jean-Baptiste Say, Thérésia Tallien, Ludovico Visconti, Fanny Beauharnais, Alphonse Perregaux, Maine de Biran, Pierre Béranger, Michel-Louis Talot, Jean Baptiste Royer, and many more.

William M. Spencer was born in 1892 in Erie, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Princeton in 1915 and enlisted as an officer in the 165th Infantry Regiment, the former "Fighting 69th" made famous by Col. William Donovan and Father Francis Duffy. As a 2nd Lieutenant, Spencer participated in the Second Battle of the Marne (1918), engaging the enemy on the heights near Villes sur Fere, France.
